Economic nexus calculator for every state, from your orders file
Drop your Shopify, Amazon or WooCommerce orders export. Nexustally applies each state's sales-tax threshold, window and marketplace rule and shows where you've crossed it.
Files it reads
An orders export as CSV or Excel with one row per order (or per line item): a date, a ship-to state and an amount. Shopify order exports, Amazon order reports, WooCommerce, Etsy and accounting exports are recognised by their column names; line items with the same order number count as one transaction. Channel and customer-type columns are optional, and let it leave out marketplace or resale sales where a state does. Or start from the Excel template.
The rules it applies
Since South Dakota v. Wayfair (2018), states can require a remote seller to collect sales tax once its sales into the state pass a threshold. Most use $100,000; some also count 200 transactions; California, Texas and New York use $500,000. They differ on the period measured and on whether marketplace sales count. Nexustally's rule table follows the Sales Tax Institute economic nexus chart (as of August 1, 2026), checked against state sources such as California's CDTFA and the Texas Comptroller.
What you get
- Every state, one table: the threshold, the window the state measures, your sales and transactions in that window, the percentage of the threshold and the date you first met it.
- Status: over the threshold, applies next January (states that look at the previous year), at the next quarter end, getting close, or under.
- Marketplace and resale sales left out where a state doesn't count them, with the amount shown.
- Monthly sales by state, to see where you're growing.
- Checks: short date ranges, refunds, rows outside the US, the 2026 Illinois and Kentucky changes, Pennsylvania's $10,000 rule.
Your order data stays on your computer
Nexustally reads your export with JavaScript in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded and there's no account to create. Close the tab and the orders are gone. Your settings (as-of date, home state, company name) can be saved in this browser; the orders aren't.
How it works
- Drop your orders export (CSV or Excel) covering last year and this year β or try the sample, or download the template.
- Check the as-of date (it defaults to your last order) and your home state.
- Read each state's status and why, then print the summary. With Pro, download the Excel workbook and the state, monthly and order CSVs.
FAQ
What does Nexustally do?
It reads your orders and, for each state, measures your sales and transactions over the period that state uses, compares them with its economic nexus threshold and tells you whether you're over, close or under. It doesn't calculate tax, register you or file returns.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Your file is read by JavaScript in your browser tab and never sent to us or anyone else. Orders aren't stored, so closing the tab clears them. Your settings (as-of date, home state, company name) can be saved in this browser.
Which files can I use?
CSV, tab-separated or Excel with one row per order or line item. A date, a ship-to state and an amount are required; order ID, country, channel and customer type are optional. Shopify, Amazon and WooCommerce exports are recognised. Download the template to see the layout.
What's free?
Importing any number of orders, the counts (states over, close and under), every check, plus full rows for the first 10 states, which are the ones over or closest to their threshold. Pro shows and exports everything: all states, the Excel workbook, and the state, monthly and order CSVs.
What isn't covered?
Physical nexus (offices, staff, inventory β including Amazon FBA inventory), local thresholds in Alaska and home-rule cities, Pennsylvania's $10,000 notice rule, registration start dates, tax rates and taxability, and income or gross-receipts taxes.
Is this tax advice?
No. Nexustally applies a rule table taken from the Sales Tax Institute economic nexus chart as of August 1, 2026, checked against several state sources, to the data you provide. Thresholds change; confirm with each state or your tax adviser before registering.
